Clothing retailer supports recently-launched Toroa programme

A new career programme for first year Māori and Pacific business students has received generous support from clothing retailer, H&M.

Spearheaded by the Business School’s Student Development and Engagement team, the Toroa programme aims to equip Māori and Pacific students with the skills and confidence needed to ensure that they are recruitment ready and prepared for the world of work.

The programme is a mix of career workshops and industry engagement events, anchored in cultural identity and future career plans.

Toroa kicked off in early August with a ‘Dress for your Future’ event, focusing on personal brand, identity and breaking down what is a ‘corporate image’. The team were delighted when H&M put their hand up to sponsor the event, donating outfits for all twenty of the students on the programme, ensuring they had professional attire for the upcoming recruitment season.

Further support came from Hallensteins, who provided extra men’s outfits for the occasion, and representatives from ASB, who shared insights around identity and the importance of values in the workplace.

"This is wonderful example of the many ways organisations contribute to our students’ success, and we can’t thank our supporters enough," says Simône Regan.

After such a great start to the programme, organisers Simône Regan and Willie Uili, are looking forward to seeing the students develop and build their confidence over the next few weeks.
