The University of Auckland has signed a development agreement for a major new student accommodation facility at 22 Stanley Street, next to the award-winning Stuart McCutcheon House in the Carlaw Park Student Village.

Developed in partnership with Precinct Properties Group, the new building will offer around 960 self-contained studio apartments, making it the largest student accommodation facility in Aotearoa New Zealand. Construction is expected to begin shortly, with the aim of opening in early 2028.

“The development is part of the University of Auckland’s continued commitment to student wellbeing,” says Simon Neale, the University’s Chief Property Officer.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Precinct to develop the next phase of our residential portfolio and strengthen the student community at Carlaw Park. Our goal is to provide safe, inclusive and vibrant accommodation that supports all students, from school leavers to postgraduates and international students. This new facility will help us meet growing demand and give more students the opportunity to enjoy the full University experience.”

The project is being delivered through a funding and development model similar to that used for Stuart McCutcheon House, with no construction capital committed by the University. It is underpinned by a long-term lease agreement with Precinct, and the University will contribute to the fit-out, furnishings and equipment (FF&E), with support from Precinct.

“This sort of capital partnership enables the University to deliver new developments without bearing the capital costs for construction. It gives us more financial flexibility and is an approach we are keen to follow for other campus developments in the future,” says Neale.

Scott Pritchard, Precinct's Chief Executive, said, “We are thrilled to be working closely with the University of Auckland to deliver for them the largest student accommodation facility in New Zealand, comprising circa 960 self-contained studios.”

Haydn & Rollett, who worked on earlier stages of the Carlaw Park Student Village, have been appointed as the main contractor.
