Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland acknowledged the achievements of its staff at the annual Vice-Chancellor’s recognition dinner, held on Thursday 17 July at the Fale Pasifika.

Hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater, the dinner recognises academic and professional staff who have demonstrated exceptional performance in their roles across teaching, research, service and leadership.

“In recognising the achievements of academic and professional staff, we are reminded of our impact on New Zealand and the communities that support us. This is what we do,” Freshwater said.

The Liggins Institute Māori Research Advisory Group – including Hine Busby,  Geremy Hema, Kimiora Henare, Kerry Hiini, Tui Kaumoana Steedman, Justin O'Sullivan, Gregg Pardoe, Jen Rogers, Haunui Royal, and with support from Jane Duffy – received the 2023-2024 Tū Rangatira mo te Ora award from the Public Health Association of New Zealand, as recognition of their contributions to weaving te ao Māori principles into the Liggins institute's research framework, and aligning projects with tikanga Māori and kaupapa Māori methodologies.

The citation presented at the Vice-Chancellor's dinner said: "Embodying values such as manaakitanga, whānaungatanga and kaitiakitanga, the Liggins Institute Māori Research Advisory Group not only enriches the Liggins Institute's work but also impacts the wider academic field, promoting a culture of respect and transformation.

"By honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and integrating Māori perspectives, particularly in early life research, the advisory group plays a vital role in advancing the health and well-being of pēpi and whānau, ensuring that Māori cultural practices and principles are reflected in research outcomes."
