Campus Books: an exciting new chapter

A new owner has been found for the old UBIQ bookstore. Campus Books will be opening its doors this month.

There’s good news for book lovers saddened by the closure of UBIQ bookshop, following its recent liquidation.

On 16 October, the bookstore’s doors will open under a new owner, Campus Books. There’ll also be a grand opening ahead of Semester One 2026.

Campus Books already operates stores at the Universities of Waikato, Lincoln and Victoria so is well educated in the needs of the academic and student community.

Its director John Chisholm says it’s not often an opportunity like this presents itself, and the Campus Books team is excited to have a spot in New Zealand’s largest university.

“The opportunity to secure this retail space was a strategic move too significant to bypass,” Chisholm says. “Recognising that success in retail hinges on the principle of location, location, location, acquiring this prime asset immediately positions Campus Books at the vibrant heart of the University of Auckland, guaranteeing immediate access to the largest student and staff market in the country.”

We’re transforming the university bookstore from a transactional hub into a vibrant, student-focused retail destination.

As well as books, Campus Books will offer gifts, souvenirs and specialty food items.

John Gallagher, the University’s retail and catering manager, says Campus Books will add to the retail options on campus.

“Campus Books as the new owner is committed to complementing the existing on-campus experience for students, staff and visitors, and they are a welcome addition to the retailing community within UoA.”

With the store now part of the University’s retail offering on campus, it is no longer tied to the Auckland University Students’ Association.

Chisholm says Campus Books customers will notice a number of differences to their experience at UBIQ.

“We’re transforming the university bookstore from a transactional hub into a vibrant, student-focused retail destination.

“While core academic necessities – textbooks, course materials, and stationery – remain our foundation, the key difference is our curated lifestyle offering. Customers will notice a bespoke giftware section for easy purchase of quality presents, keepsakes and New Zealand-themed souvenirs, filling a clear campus need. This is complemented by a selection of niche food and beverage products catering to diverse tastes.

“Crucially, Campus Books actively champions local culture, prominently displaying and supporting titles by New Zealand, Māori and Pacific authors, ensuring the store truly reflects the community it serves.”

Campus Books also offers a recycled books programme, which aligns with the University’s sustainability values.

As well as the physical store in the Kate Edger Information Commons, with frontage on Alfred Street, Campus Books has a strong online presence.

Julian Bottaro, associate director of the University’s Commercial Services and Operations, says Campus Books brings a refreshed and future-focused retail experience to the University.

“Campus Books’ experience and commitment to sustainability, student needs, and academic excellence makes them a perfect fit for our community.”

A soft  launch of Campus Books takes place on 16 October 2025, with a grand opening ahead of Semester One 2026.
