The University remains No 1 in Aotearoa New Zealand and is ranked 156th globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026.

Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, has retained its place among the world’s top universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, despite the largest-ever number of universities participating.
This year’s rankings saw 2,191 universities take part, up from 2,092 last year. It is the highest number in the rankings’ history.
The University placed in the top 7.12 percent, up from 7.3 percent last year, and is now ranked 156 in the world (=152 last year). It remains the highest-ranked university in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the only New Zealand institution in the global top 200.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater says the result reflects the hard work and collective effort of the University community.
“In a year that saw the largest number of universities ever included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, retaining our place in the global top 200 and remaining No 1 in Aotearoa New Zealand is an excellent achievement.
“It demonstrates the strength of our people and our ongoing commitment to delivering world-class teaching and research.”

The University performed strongly in several subject areas. Engineering remains among the top four in Australia and New Zealand, while Psychology made one of the largest gains, rising from 79 to 59. Education also improved, moving up from 34 to 33, reinforcing the University’s reputation across a range of disciplines.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Frank Bloomfield, says the rankings reflect the innovative thinking that’s at the heart of the University’s research community.
“As public-good funding for research in universities continues to face constraints, this recognition highlights the impact of our academics and students, and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to fostering a research environment that enhances academic excellence and addresses the needs of society.”
In June, the University was ranked 28th equal in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for sustainability, placing in the top 1.2%.
