Where talent meets industry: A win-win for students and start-ups

Master of Engineering Management students collaborate with Newmarket Innovation Precinct member OPUM to develop scalable medical device quality assurance.

The Newmarket Innovation Precinct (NIP) brings together university research and commercial enterprise, creating a win-win for both academia and industry. By collaborating, companies are exposed to top student talent and can build relationships that could lead to future hires. At the same time, students have the chance to help accelerate regional technology working alongside industry experts.

A recent collaboration between the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) programme and medical technology start-up OPUM, a current co-locator at NIP, shows a practical example of how this talent pipeline works.

Over an intensive eight-week project, a team of postgraduate engineering students spent up to 2,000 collective hours solving a pressing commercial challenge: establishing a reliable supply chain and quality assurance framework to launch OPUM's orthopaedic knee brace into the strictly regulated United States market

For the students, who ranged from fresh graduates to experienced industry managers, stepping into a start-up environment provided a vital lesson in modern operations. The group developed a better understanding of real-world engineering problems, which often have multiple correct answers. Using an agile approach, the team worked in rapid sprint cycles to adapt to evolving product requirements and shifting overseas regulations. This environment highlighted an interesting challenge: while agile methods encourage flexibility and quick progress, medical regulatory frameworks demand absolute rigour, design controls and traceability.

Navigating this balance meant the students had to move away from highly theoretical quality-assurance models. Instead, they focused on practical, scalable processes, creating mechanical testing reference guides and quality-control frameworks that could easily integrate with OPUM’s daily operations. By learning to balance adaptability with compliance, the students could drive innovation without compromising product quality or regulatory rules.

Project lead and lecturer Associate Professor Steven Briggs says maintaining academic depth while delivering a working solution for the company was essential to the course design. Students were evaluated on 12 core agile processes and documented their personal development through continuous learning journals. This dual focus encouraged them to constantly evaluate their own strategic thinking, teamwork and cross-cultural communication skills. By balancing mechanical engineering needs with supply chain logistics, the students moved beyond classroom learning to build real-world capability under commercial pressure.

The resulting framework gives OPUM immediate operational value, covering product risk analysis, quality control protocols and supplier qualification systems. This outcome highlights the strategic advantage for industry partners who co-locate at NIP. By opening their operational challenges to postgraduate talent, businesses get a diverse team of capable engineers who bring fresh perspectives, while the partner retains full ownership of the intellectual property.

Through these industry-integrated projects, NIP is bridging the gap between university research and the commercial world and preparing the next generation of tech leaders to step confidently into the workforce.
