Epsom Campus site

Thursday 20 August 2026

Background

The Epsom Campus site was previously home to the Auckland College of Education, which became the Faculty of Education and Social Work when it merged with the University in 2004.

The campus has not been used by University staff and students since the Faculty of Education and Social Work moved to the City Campus in time for Semester One, 2024. The move was part of the University’s long-term plan to bring its central Auckland activities together on fewer sites.

The relocation gave staff and students easier access to a wider range of services, facilities, and opportunities on the City Campus. It also provided modern teaching and learning spaces and created more opportunities for collaboration across faculties.

Future plans

The University is working through the steps required to sell the Epsom Campus site.

Before any sale can go ahead, the University must meet a number of legal and government requirements. This includes working with Crown agencies, meeting obligations under the Public Works Act, and following right of first refusal requirements.

The University is engaging with parties and stakeholders who have an interest in the site, and these discussions are ongoing. The University recognises the significance of the site and is committed to working constructively with stakeholders and the wider community.

The University is committed to keeping students, staff, neighbours, and other stakeholders informed, and further details will be shared as they become available.

Current use

An early childhood education centre continues to operate from the Epsom Campus. The centre is independently run by a trust, and has arrangements in place that allow time for relocation to a permanent alternative site.

The University continues to provide security, grounds, and maintenance services to keep the campus safe and secure.
