Accessible Accommodation Options
At the University of Auckland, we’re committed to making campus life accessible and inclusive for all students. Whether you have a disability, health-related needs, or require specific living arrangements, our team is here to support you in finding safe, comfortable, and appropriate accommodation. This page outlines the options available and how to let us know what you need.
If you have specific needs, please ensure these are clearly indicated in the relevant fields when completing your accommodation application, or contact the Accommodation Solutions Team using the button below.
Please note: We try to make sure everyone has suitable accommodation, but due to limited availability this is not always possible.
Examples of Accommodation needs
Your accommodation needs may include, but are not limited to:
- A studio, adapted, or accessible room due to disability
- An ensuite room due to disability or health-related needs
- Catered or self- catered accommodation due to disability or health-related needs
- A fridge in your room to store medication or special dietary items
- A larger room due to height or mobility needs.
Adapted and accessible needs
Please note that the University of Auckland is located on a hill. As such, access to all of our residences includes varying degrees of incline or decline. This should be taken into consideration when assessing your accommodation needs.
We offer a number of accessible rooms across our Halls and Residences, which may include features such as:
- Ensuite rooms
- Swipe Access
- Power-assisted doors
- Wheelchair-accessible lifts
- Low-height kitchen work surfaces
- Private wet rooms equipped with shower chairs and handrails
For students who are deaf or hearing-impaired, we can arrange for additional safety features in partnership with our maintenance team, such as:
- Visual (flashing light) fire alarms
Assistance animals
Only New Zealand Certified Disability Assist Dogs are permitted in University halls and residences. To discuss suitable accommodation for you and your assist dog, please contact us.
Emergency evacuation support
If you require assistance in the event of an emergency, you may need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP). A PEEP outlines the actions you should take during an emergency in a University building (e.g., fire) and ensures that Accommodation staff can provide appropriate support.
You may require a PEEP if you:
- Have a hearing or visual impairment
- Have a mobility impairment
- Experience seizures or other conditions that affect your ability to respond quickly
- Are sensitive to loud noises or flashing lights
Please note that during emergencies, lifts will be out of service and power-assisted doors will operate manually.
To request a PEEP, please email accom@auckland.ac.nz. We will connect you with your Residence Manager to develop your plan.
Additional support for Students with Disabilities
If you have a disability, we encourage you to also reach out to Ratonga Hauātanga Tauira | Student Disability Services (SDS). The University may be able to provide reasonable adjustments to your learning and assessment experience.
