Volunteer Leadership Opportunities

Make your year more rewarding

While living in Accommodation, there are many ways in which each resident can make the
experience their own. Throughout the year we encourage residents to tap into their interests and leadership skills to reflect their unique and diverse identities. Volunteer Leadership Opportunities enrich the Accommodation community and the skillset of individuals taking the initiative.  In recognition of this work, residents may be nominated to receive a Residential Excellence Award and invited to attend the ceremony gala at the end of the academic year.

To take part in this initiative, residents may show their volunteer and leadership qualities in the following categories:

Āwhina | Service

  • Providing a service and/or support to the Accommodation community.
  • This is typically done by becoming a PASS Mentor, a hall or residence representative through the Residential Advisory Committee.

Kotahitanga | Inclusion

  • Champion initiatives or efforts which provide greater inclusion to marginalised communities. These include but are not limited to inclusion for those with disabilities, gender and sexual minorities, racial and cultural diversity.

Tiaki Taiao | Sustainability

  • Lead or join initiatives supporting sustainable practices. This may include joining your hall/residence green team, leading sustainable initiatives, participating in recycling, composting, or gardening programmes.

Whanaungatanga | Community

  • Illustrated your global citizenship and leadership by being an involved member of your Accommodation community. This can be done by joining wider initiatives across the University or within Accommodation which focus on building bridges and strengthening bonds.

Co-Curricular Recognition Programme

  • This University programme formally recognises a student’s engagement in co-curricular experiences. While not led by Accommodation, participating in their pathways to recognition may also be recognised through the Residential Excellence Awards.

This initiative is a self-starter but can be supported by Resident Coordinators and Residential Advisers. Residents who have interests in the above four categories should check in with their Accommodation team for further guidance, to help promote their work, or recruit more members.
