Introduction to deep learning workshop

Deep learning (DL) is a specialised subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to extract insights from data.

For postgraduate research students and researchers with some Python and machine learning experience.

Wednesday 4 - Thursday 5 November 2026

Prerequisites: Participants will be expected to have basic familiarity with the Python programming language (e.g. Programming with Python workshop).

Attendees will be able to:

• Define Deep Learning (DL) and how it relates to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
• Describe the fundamental components of a neural network.
• Explain how neural networks are used to make classifications or predictions.
• Develop and apply a neural network implemented with Python to classify data and make predictions.

• Deep learning methods often benefit from access to graphical processing units (GPUs). See GPUs for research computing and AI for how to access GPUs via University-facilitated research compute services.
• Python users of any experience level are encouraged to engage with their peers across the University research community, including workshop instructors and CeR staff, by joining Hacky Hour to post questions and exchange ideas.
