What is NVivo?

NVivo is data analysis software for researchers working with qualitative information, such as interviews, documents, survey data and web pages. It accommodates a wide range of research methods such as network and organisational analysis, evidence-based research, mixed methods research and the framework methodology.

Features include:

  • Organise, store, and retrieve data easily.
  • Supported data formats include audio files, videos, digital photos, word, PDF, spreadsheets, rich text, and web and social media data.
  • Playback facility for audio and video files that facilitates interview transcription.
  • Import notes from Evernote.
  • Import citations from EndNote, RefWorks, Mendeley and other bibliographic management software.

Install NVivo

On a University-owned device

  • Self-Service: Open the Software Center (Windows) or Self Service (Mac) on your device to install NVivo directly.
  • Request IT Help: If you cannot find it, log a request via the ITS Service Portal to have IT install it for you.

On a personal device

  • Download and install the software directly from here.

Training and support

Licensing

The University of Auckland has a site-wide licence agreement that allows installation of NVivo on all University owned or leased Windows machines. The site licence is renewed annually. A new licence key is provided with each renewal.
