Research integrity advisers

The University has a network of faculty-based research integrity advisers to support researchers with their queries about good research practice (GRP) and to provide guidance about dealing with and reporting concerns about research conduct.

The role of a research integrity adviser (RIA)

The role encompasses the following:

  • To be the first point of contact for researchers to discuss queries about aspects of good research practice (GRP)
  • To discuss concerns raised about research conduct and provide guidance about reporting these concerns
  • To be part of an RIA Community of Interest for regular peer-to-peer engagement and ongoing training opportunities
  • To contribute to the development of guidelines and training material to support the RIA role and train researchers in GRP
  • To report concerns or allegations about potential breaches of the Research Integrity Policy to the Research Integrity Officer for further investigation

RIAs do not investigate concerns or alleged breaches of the Research Integrity Policy but may assist with an investigation.

The RIA role is distinct from the ethics adviser role, unless someone holds both.

What is the difference between a research integrity adviser and an ethics adviser?

Typically, ethics advisers provide guidance on the ethical issues arising in research design, based on the local ethical requirements.

RIAs will act as champions of good research practice across the entire research lifecycle and provide guidance in areas such as data management, authorship, and publishing.
