“I decided to enter the Research Showcase in 2025 because I wanted to undertake the challenge of creating an image that depicted my research.

“I really enjoyed using creative skills that I didn't even know I had. The combination of creating the image and then speaking about it was very enjoyable, but the best part was seeing the reactions at the live showcase. It reinforced that my research and creativity are worthwhile. 

“When I first submitted my image, I wasn’t fully satisfied with it. I originally wanted to take a different approach, but I wasn't fully trained in the graphic design software I needed, so I had to pivot. I doubted myself and didn't think I submitted my best work at first. That all changed when I stood in front of my image at the showcase and proudly represented it. "

“If you’re a doctoral candidate considering participating in the Research Showcase, do it! Don't talk yourself out of participating due to a lack of skill, a tangible description of your research or confidence. Trust yourself! 

“The Research Showcase gave my research a clear focal point. I’m now using my image as the logo for my startup, where I’m commercialising my research, and I also used it on the front cover of my final PhD thesis. 'Perspective' will continue to follow my work, and I am grateful to the Research Showcase for providing the opportunity to create it.”
