Mardian came to New Zealand from Balikpapan, Indonesia. He received the New Zealand Association of Southeast Asian Nations Scholarship to study a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts, leading to Master of Arts in Development Studies.

He currently works as a Transformation Manager at a multi-disciplinary contract mining, engineering and oil & gas services company based in Indonesia. He oversees and manages his company's strategy for diversification, digitisation, carbonisation as well as other transformation agenda.

Mardian says one of his main reasons for choosing the University of Auckland was the 'fantastic academic management, student support systems and facilities'. He also found the research topics and lectures that focused on issues in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, relevant and helpful to his learning.

For Mardian, an important ingredient to supporting student success is balancing study and family life. During his study, his wife and toddler son joined him in Auckland and they were able to enjoy the 'great quality of life' the city offered.
