The Award was established in 2021 by University of Auckland alumna Emma Waterhouse, a practitioner in environmental management. Emma had a lifelong fascination with natural systems and the impact of human activity on the environment.

The main purpose of the Award is to encourage and support women students undertaking study or research in the natural sciences relating to the geography and ecology of Aotearoa New Zealand and its marine and terrestrial environments, including the sub-Antarctic or Antarctica.
