The Award was established in 2013 in the memory of Judge Karina Raewyn Roimata Williams of Tūhoe, Te Whakatōhea, Tainui, Te Aupōuri and Ngāitai Iwi, who was a graduate of the University of Auckland. It is financed from funds donated by Dr Yash Ghai, Robb Lecturer at the University of Auckland in 2007, by legal colleagues and friends of Judge Williams, and by the Williams whānau.

The main purpose of the Award is to recognise cultural involvement and academic merit at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland by graduating law students of New Zealand Māori descent.
