The Scholarship was established in 2021 and is funded by a significant bequest left to the Auckland Law School by the late Professor Coote.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to enable postgraduate study in the philosophy of law for exceptional students who, like Professor Coote, can demonstrate a passion and commitment to the study and practice of the rule of law.
