The Award was established in 2019 and is funded by the Raye Freedman Trust. Raye Freedman was a businesswoman, philanthropist and property developer who was a generous supporter of the arts and education.

The main purpose of the Award is to assist two Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Arts conjoint students from the Auckland region, who are enrolling in the first year of their degree, and who are experiencing financial hardship. The Award will provide support for the first three years of degree study.
