Accessible venues and car parking for visitors
The University offers a range of accessible venues and parking facilities for visitors.
The University has a range of accessible venues with mobility friendly car parks – spaces that are larger and nearer to access ways.
Sir Owen G Glenn building
Sir Owen G Glenn building on 12 Grafton Road is mobility and wheelchair accessible and has accessible toilets.
Mobility parking spaces are available within the building car park on 16 Grafton Rd. A CCS mobility car parking permit is required to park in these spaces. Casual parking costs $5 an hour.
Fale Pasifika
Fale Pasifika on 20 Wynyard Street is accessible via an access ramp at the rear of the building. It has accessible toilets nearby in the Centre for Pacific Studies building.
Mobility parking is available in the Sir Owen G Glenn building.
Old Government House
Located at 24 Princes Street, Old Government House (OGH) is a heritage building. Certain areas of OGH on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible. The Vice Chancellor’s suite and Buttery bar, also on the ground floor, are not accessible due to several steps. There is no elevator in the building, and as a result, the first floor is not accessible.
OGH does not have accessible toilets.
Mobility parking is available at the main gate car park at 5 Symonds Street. This is an uncovered car park, accessed via a barrier arm next to the Old Choral Hall building.
The ClockTower
The ClockTower at 22 Princes Street is mobility and wheelchair accessible via a wheelchair lift near the front door. There is one public elevator in the building.
Accessible toilets are on the basement level only.
Mobility parking is available at the main gate car park at 5 Symonds St.
Conference Centre
The University Conference Centre, located in building 423 at 22 Symonds Street is mobility and wheelchair accessible. However, it does not have accessible writing tablets. Accessible toilets are available within the Conference Centre.
Mobility parking is available at the Sir Owen G Glenn building or 5 Symonds Street where parking costs $5 per hour.
Gus Fisher Gallery
The Gus Fisher Gallery at 74 Shortland Street is not accessible from the front entrance steps. However, it is accessible with assistance, from a side entrance followed by an elevator to the gallery.
The gallery has an accessible toilet though assistance to open heavy doors may be required.
One uncovered mobility parking space is available at 74 Shortland Street.
Waipapa Marae
Some parts of Waipapa Marae are accessible.
- The Wharenui (the carved house) is accessible for wheelchair users from the front.
- The Wharekai is accessible via a pathway behind the Wharenui or, with assistance, across the grass. There are steps leading down to the main area of the Wharekai, making the Wharekai only partially accessible once inside.
Toilets at Waipapa Marae are not accessible.
Mobility parking is available at the Sir Owen G Glenn building and on Wynyard Street and costs $5 per hour.
Staff and student mobility parking
- Students, contact the disability coordinators.
- Staff who have permanent disabilities and require access to University disability carparking spaces must liaise directly with car parking.
- Staff with temporary impairments requiring assistance with accessible carparking should read the Accessibility and Parking for Staff page.
