Soundtrack to your studies - 2001

Campus sounds from the 2000s.

The biggest Orientation gig this year was the Mash It Up! event headlined by The Black Seeds. It was held first during O Week at the St James, but was so popular that the band returned to do another gig (with a discount for students) at another ex-cinema in the same complex - The Regent - later in the year.

At the time, there was a great range of music across the city with dance music at Fu Bar and Staircase, folk/indie at The Temple (top of Queen St), jazz at London Bar, and rock at the King’s Arms. Gigs were less common at the Crook & Flail on Mercury Lane, but here we can see Tadpole were playing a gig there not long after placing their debut album Buddhafinger at No.2. However the standout act mentioned is Goldenhorse who were still a few years away from having a massive hit ‘Maybe Tomorrow.’

The Big Day Out festival was still going strong and this year was headlined by Limp Bizkit, Rammstein, Coldplay, The Black Eyed Peas, and Carl Cox.

The biggest international single of the year was ‘Walking Away’ by Craig David, who wooed audiences with his silky voice and pencil thin goatee beard.

However even bigger was the debut album by Dido, No Angel. Oddly enough, she was first introduced to audiences through her song ‘Thank You’ being used as the hook for the song ‘Stan’ by Eminem. Her album ended up selling more in New Zealand than his did, though obviously Eminem ended up being the name that everyone remembered in the decades that followed…
