Soundtrack to your studies - 2016

Campus sounds from the 2010s.

The biggest international hit of the year was ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. A couple of years earlier, Ronson had played in New Zealand as one of the headliners at Rhythm and Vines, but now he was reaching a new level of fame.

Shadows had a range of local acts throughout O week too - spreading from the dance music of Jupiter Project and Jetski Safari; to the indie rock of Night Gaunts, Paquin, and She’s So Rad; to the soul/funk of the Hipstamatics; to the rap of Derty Sesh.

One of the regular events on the calendar was the yearly Toga Party, where students danced in white robes to the latest bass-heavy hits. Did you go along in your first year?

The most unusual musical breakthrough by a kiwi songwriter that year was by the producer Te Whiti Warbrick (aka SickDrumz). He worked on Rihanna’s US No.1 single ‘Needed Me.’ Warbrick later commented that: “It's hard to believe that I made this song on an old laptop with some broken headphones in a tiny bedroom on the back of a farm with a view of cows.”

The most unavoidably popular song of the year was ‘Shape of You’ by Ed Sheeran.
