Ensuring your gift makes a difference
Every gift makes a difference and enhances the work of the University of Auckland as an exceptional centre of excellence.
People who include the University in their will, after providing for family and loved ones, are inspired to give for many reasons. Some wish to contribute to the social and economic prosperity of their community. Others want to see something meaningful grow from their personal financial success. Still others want to provide the same kind of assistance that someone gave them during their own academic or professional careers.
Below are some of the different areas a gift in will supports.
Student support can be made to a specific faculty, or across the University. You may choose to help a student in financial need, provide a scholarship so a disadvantaged young person can attend New Zealand’s leading university, or provide an exceptional opportunity for the best and brightest students.
A faculty, school, department or research centre, where the programmes and projects have particular importance for you. Your gift could fund research projects or areas where traditional funding is not available or provide specialised equipment and quality facilities to enhance the work of staff and students.
Medical research can be literally life-changing and lifesaving. However, the University cannot always provide the level of financial investment needed for better results in diseases like cancer, diabetes and Parkinson’s, or fund research to prevent new threats to health such as the effect on the lifelong health of a baby from conditions while in the womb.
Unrestricted gifts are of special value, as they give the University flexibility to use funds where and when they are most needed. This may be to recruit an exceptional researcher, create a new staff position, support a student in financial crisis, purchase essential equipment for groundbreaking research or for the research project itself. The University of Auckland Endowment Fund was created to provide the University with exactly this flexibility. All the world’s great universities have extensive endowment funds. This type of gift is a way to live on and continue to do good beyond your lifetime.
Regardless of the motivation behind your choice of support, we can discuss and help you with the practicalities and timings in applying your gift to ensure the University honours the spirit of your philanthropy.
