The Mātauranga Māori Collection brings together more than 13,000 resources that support Māori research at Waipapa Taumata Rau.

In 2002, Te Tumu Herenga | Libraries and Learning Services established the Mātauranga Māori Collection to acknowledge Māori as tangata whenua, increase the visibility of our Māori collections, and support both mātauranga Māori | Māori knowledge and Māori research at Waipapa Taumata Rau.
Located on Level One of the General Library, the Mātauranga Māori Collection comprises monographs, serials, bound manuscripts, government reports, Māori Land Court Minute Books, and visual materials. These contain iwi histories, waiata | songs, pūrākau | traditional stories, language resources and much more.
The collection brings these taonga | treasures together in one dedicated place for researchers and students looking to browse Māori-led scholarship and publications. Like other General Library collections, it follows the Dewey Decimal system, for example, you'll find music-related items in the 780s, and food-related items in the 640s.
As a living research collection, the Mātauranga Māori Collection is regularly updated with new material. You can explore the collection via the Library catalogue.
Current holdings include:
- 12,104 books
- 802 journals
- 102 music items
- 44 visual materials
In addition to the Mātauranga Māori Collection, the General Library offers complementary resources located nearby. On Level One, you can explore a diverse range of materials including Māori picture books, Junior Fiction and Non-fiction, Young Adult Fiction, and the Pacific Collections. On Level G, the Microtexts Room contains a comprehensive set of Māori Land Court Minute Books on microfilm, covering the years from 1865 to 1975.
You can access further resources on mātauranga Māori, Māori research, and methodologies through the Te Tumu Herenga Māori subject guide.
