5 September 2025
The funding will go towards ambitious five-year research programmes.

Faculty of Science researchers have secured $25.8 million from the government’s Endeavour Fund to lead three major projects tackling climate change, sustainable aquaculture, and responsible mining.
The funded projects:
- Te Moana Mahana: Ocean change forecasting for climate resilience in Aotearoa ($8.9m)
Led by Associate Professor Melissa Bowen, School of Environment. - Reducing spat losses to grow New Zealand's greenshell mussel sector ($6m)
Led by Dr Brad Skelton, Institute of Marine Science. - Next-generation ore: Towards sustainable mining for regional prosperity and societal resilience ($10.9m)
Led by Professor JR Rowland, School of Environment.
“These programmes have excellent principal investigators, but these are always team wins,” said Associate Dean (Research) Professor Geoff Willmott. “Congratulations to all those involved.”
Faculty researchers, including from the School of Chemical Sciences, are also playing key roles in projects led by other institutions.
Willmott acknowledges the effort behind every proposal.
“Let's acknowledge those whose proposals were not successful this time, including three faculty-led submissions in the second round," he says. "While it is likely disappointing today, your efforts have laid a strong foundation for future success, and we appreciate the time and energy you have invested.”
