Learning by doing recognised with awards

Fifty participants of extra-curricular programmes from the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship have received Distinguished Graduate Awards.
Dozens of students at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland have had their hard work and experience in areas beyond formal study recognised through the University’s highest co-curricular honour – the University of Auckland Distinguished Graduate Award.
Among the award recipients were 50 participants of the diverse and hands-on programmes delivered through the Business School’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and open to students of all faculties.
The Distinguished Graduate Award is the pinnacle of achievement within the University’s Co-curricular Recognition Programme. It acknowledges students who go above and beyond their academic study to build capabilities that help them thrive beyond university. To receive the award, students complete two out of four pathways - Innovation, Community Engagement, Global Citizens and Leadership. Each pathway includes at least 40 hours of activity, a development workshop, a reflective piece, and a final panel interview. The award is officially noted on students’ academic transcripts, and recipients receive a certificate signed by the Vice-Chancellor at an annual awards ceremony.
Beyond the Innovation Pathway, other CIE participants also earned credit towards the award through their leadership and service, including leadership roles in the Velocity committee and other high-impact initiatives.
CIE Manager Kimberley Ansell says CIE plays an important role in enabling students to get practical experience in start-up creation or developing skills to support future innovative careers.
“The Distinguished Graduate Award provides formal recognition for the real-world learning and leadership our students undertake alongside their studies. Their experiences with CIE might encompass developing skills and knowledge in everything from business planning, to leading teams, to technology and prototyping skills. We’re delighted to see so many CIE participants receiving these awards. It signals to future employers that these students are proactive, growth-oriented and ready to contribute meaningfully to the world.”
