International Open Access Week (19-25 October) is a global opportunity to celebrate the benefits of making research more openly available and explore how we can increase the visibility, accessibility and impact of our work.

Open Access helps ensure research can be discovered, read and used by anyone, including researchers, clinicians, policymakers, educators and members of the public. By removing barriers to knowledge, Open Access supports collaboration, innovation and greater real-world impact.

If you're thinking about publishing your research, Open Access Week is the perfect time to learn more about your publishing options and how to share your work effectively.

Build your publishing knowledge

The Library offers an introductory publishing workshop twice a year, once per semester. This workshop provides practical guidance to help researchers navigate the publishing landscape, make informed decisions and maximise the reach and impact of their research.

Whether you're preparing your first manuscript or looking to better understand the publishing landscape, the workshop covers:

  • An overview of the publishing process and peer review.
  • Practical tips for choosing an appropriate journal.
  • An introduction to Open Access publishing and the different publishing pathways.
  • Creative Commons licences and how they support sharing and reuse.

This workshop is ideal for researchers who want to build confidence in the publishing process while learning how Open Access can increase the reach and impact of their work.

Workshop: Publish Smarter – Choosing Where to Publish

As part of Open Access Week, we will be running our workshop: 'Publish Smarter: Choosing Where to Publish' on Tuesday 20 October at 11am-12:30pm

Register here: Publish Smarter – Choosing Where to Publish

Publishing today is about more than simply getting your research into print. It's about choosing the right publishing pathway to maximise the reach and influence of your research.

During the workshop, we'll explore Open Access publishing options, alternative pathways such as preprints and policy briefs, Indigenous publishing, and practical strategies for ensuring your research reaches the audiences who can benefit most.

The workshop also provides practical guidance on how to:

  • Evaluate journals for quality, reputation and fit.
  • Recognise and avoid predatory publishers.
  • Understand peer review, indexing and journal metrics.
  • Develop publishing strategies aligned with your research goals.

Whether your goal is academic advancement, community engagement or policy impact, this session will help you make confident, informed publishing decisions.

If you're unable to attend a workshop, you can explore the University of Auckland's online publishing resources. These include guidance on the publishing process, Open Access publishing, Creative Commons licences, choosing the right journal, and the University's Open Access publishing agreements, which may help reduce or cover article processing charges (APCs) with participating publishers.
