Open Access publishing agreements

Open Access agreements between the University and scholarly publishers, including an A-Z list of all journals included in these agreements.

The University has 20 Open Access publishing agreements in 2026. These agreements allow corresponding authors from the University to publish their work open access without paying article processing charges (APCs).

What are Open Access publishing agreements?

Open Access publishing agreements - also known as read and publish agreements – allow University authors to publish Open Access in eligible journals at no cost to them.

Te Kahu Tauira, Student and Scholarly Services pays a single annual fee that covers:

  • Open Access publishing for University of Auckland corresponding authors
  • Access to subscription content for all staff and students

Most agreements are negotiated nationally through the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL), which represents university libraries across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

How to use the agreements

To publish Open Access under these agreements, authors must:

  1. Be the corresponding author affiliated with the University of Auckland.
  2. Use a staff email address (name@auckland.ac.nz) when submitting the manuscript.
    a. Student email addresses (name@aucklanduni.ac.nz) cannot be used.
    b. Doctoral students may request a staff email account through their faculty group services co-ordinator or supervisor.
  3. Select the Open Access publishing option during submission.
  4. Choose a Creative Commons (CC) licence for the article (required by all agreements).

Note: Some journals may still charge additional fees (e.g. page charges, colour charges, service fees). These are not covered by the agreements.

2026 alphabetical title list: https://caul.libguides.com/read-and-publish/title-list

This list includes all journals covered by the University’s 2026 Open Access publishing agreements. The corresponding authors can publish Open Access in these journals without paying APCs.

Note:

  • Not all titles from every publisher are included in the agreements, and not all article types may be covered. Once you locate a journal, check the publisher’s detailed eligibility in the CAUL guide.
  • Some journals may still charge other fees, such as page charges, colour charges, or service fees.
  • Annual Reviews titles are listed separately – Journals A-Z.
  • Inclusion in an agreement does not indicate journal quality. Use the Think. Check. Submit. checklist to evaluate journal credibility.
  • All our agreements this year, except Wiley Gold, are uncapped, which means authors can publish an unlimited number of eligible articles without the agreement running out.
