Introduction to doctoral development

Find out about the University of Auckland's Doctoral Graduate Profile, Doctoral Training Needs Analysis, and Doctoral Development Framework.

Doctoral Graduate Profile

The Doctoral Graduate Profile outlines the qualities the University aims to nurture in all doctoral graduates. As you begin your research, you might find it useful to familiarise yourself with these as part of shaping your own development goals.

Doctoral Training Needs Analysis

The Doctoral Training Needs Analysis is one of the Confirmation milestones. To meet this milestone, you will create a tailored professional development plan to set you up for success during your doctorate and beyond.

You will structure your plan according to your unique research journey and career path by using the Doctoral Development Framework and seeking advice from your supervisors. To find out more, we recommended completing the PhD Confirmation of Candidature canvas module.

Note: Most candidates manage their candidature (including Confirmation Milestones) on Wahapū. However, if you are enrolled in a named doctorate (DClinPsy, DHSc, DMedSc, DocFA, EdD), you will complete the Training Needs Analysis milestone manually using the PDF form below. For more information, speak to your supervisor.

Doctoral Development Framework (DDF)

You will use the Doctoral Development Framework (DDF) when completing your Doctoral Training Needs Analysis, and you'll keep referring to it in the years ahead. It's a helpful, holistic resource which will guide you throughout your doctoral journey as you navigate the many programmes and pathways available to you..

The Doctoral Development Framework contains six development areas, each with four key skills categories, and a wide variety of ideas and resources to support your development. Learn more:
