Postgraduate Research Student Support (PReSS)

PReSS is funding that helps postgraduate research students to undertake their research and to complete their studies in a timely manner. It is above and beyond any scholarships, grants, or academic unit funding allocations. PReSS account funding is intended to help cover direct research costs only and may only be used in accordance with the PReSS Account Policy and Procedures.

Doctoral candidates with an active PReSS account can view balances and transactions through Student Services Online. For doctoral degrees with a taught component, funding will only be available during the supervised research component.

Candidates with PReSS account queries should approach their supervisors, department or school administrator in the first instance.

How PReSS funding is allocated

As a doctoral candidate, the amount you are allocated depends on your subject area (approved by the Board of Graduate Studies when you enrol). You can find details in the Appendix to the PReSS Account Policy and Procedure.

The Tertiary Education Commission allocates funding bands that recognise the relative research costs for each doctoral subject area. These form the basis for allocating funds.
