Originally from China, Jay has lived in Auckland since the age of seven. “Throughout this time, I developed a sense of belonging and connection to Auckland. This was a key motivation for me in considering the University of Auckland above other universities overseas."

Jay learned about the scholarship through the University of Auckland website and has some advice for those thinking of applying. “Work hard, there is no harm in going a little further as it shows that you care, and how you approach things in life.

"The scholarship relieved financial pressure on my family and allows me to achieve my dreams with lessened psychologically and physically burden.”

Jay is drawn to nursing as “I would be able to help those in need.” He has many interests and plans to return to study in the future. “Apart from my passion for medical sciences, a long-term goal of mine would be to continue studying law, geography, or nursing at a postgraduate level.”

“I enjoy the balance that Auckland has, from the metropolis of the city to expansive beaches, it really allows for an easy balance between work, study, and life. The best part about the City Campus is the accessibility by public transport. The bustling city centre is a 5-minute walk away and there are many interesting places that can be reached within 20 minutes.

“I’m working part-time at Spark Scholar as a tutor for high school and intermediate students. I was able to find this job through submitting applications showcasing both my academic accomplishments and ability to teach.”
