Dance Studies

Overview

Dance Studies incorporates a broad and inclusive understanding of dance as an embodied practice. Situated in Auckland, our Dance Studies Programme has a strong focus on the Asia-Pacific region and the diverse locations that dance takes place in, in local and regional societies. Leading towards postgraduate research into various aspects of dance, the programme is driven by practical and theoretical investigations into the moving body.

Areas of study

The Dance Studies Programme has world-leading teachers and researchers in dance education, creation, performance and criticism. Diverse dance forms and cultural contexts are investigated and advanced, and international partnerships and established networks allow for engagement with global discourse in these areas.

What you will learn

The academic challenges posed by the programmes encourage imaginative thought and action and prepare you for the rewards and demands of the art and the industry. As a postgraduate student you will have the opportunity to move between theory and practice, to deeply engage with an area of research specific to your background and to experiment in new processes and methods of conceptualising your work.

Career opportunities

Dance careers go beyond performing on stage. A postgraduate degree in Dance Studies will help you to create your own pathway into specialised work, including choreography, community dance, dance education, dance journalism, dance administration and academic research.
