Overview

Asian Studies at the University of Auckland is New Zealand's largest and most comprehensive university department specialising in the study of Asia.

Postgraduate students in Asian Studies join a research community of scholars and students with interests in history, politics, literature, film studies, gender studies, social and cultural studies.

Areas of study

Asian Studies takes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Asia, integrating aspects of Asian languages and cultures with history, politics and comparative literature.

Postgraduate work in Asian Studies requires an ability to conduct research in one or more Asian languages. You are encouraged to take advantage of the scholarships and exchange programmes on offer and improve your language skills by studying abroad either before or during your postgraduate study.

Our graduates have careers in international organisations, NGOs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other areas of government. You might also work for a multinational company or a New Zealand company in Asia, or within New Zealand's Asian communities.
