Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity

Professor Cathy Stinear BSc PhD

" "

Cathy is responsible for equity policy, strategy and projects, including developing an equity operational plan in collaboration with the Pro Vice-Chancellors Māori and Pacific.

Equity groups include Pacific peoples, people with disabilities, low socioeconomic or refugee backgrounds, the Rainbow community and others who may face barriers to access and success.

As Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity, Cathy is supported in her office by policy advisers and an Equity Manager. She will work closely with leaders across the University, particularly a Student Equity Manager in Campus Life and an Associate Director of Staff Equity and Staff Equity Manager, both in Human Resources.

Equity is central to allied health, which is Cathy’s background. Alongside her work as Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity, Cathy is also a clinical neuroscientist, leading a team of stroke researchers based at Auckland City Hospital. She works with people with disabilities following stroke and has lived experience of being a woman in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine).

“I haven’t had ‘equity’ in the title of my roles or responsibilities. However, I approach all of my work in teaching, learning and service from an equity perspective, to promote equitable successes for learners, people with neurological conditions and colleagues,” Cathy says. “That embodies what the University is striving for – that equity is embedded in all of our work.”
