Scott St John: exceptional service
Former Chancellor Scott St John’s relationship with Waipapa Taumata Rau began in the 1980s and early 1990s as a commerce student and has continued across three decades of professional leadership. His career spans senior executive roles, major governance positions and national advisory work that has influenced the direction of New Zealand’s capital markets. His long tenure as chief executive of First NZ Capital, now Jarden, established his reputation as a top investment advisor. His leadership roles at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Fonterra, Mercury Energy and ANZ Bank New Zealand placed him at the centre of some of the nation’s most strategically important organisations.
The University benefitted from the depth and breadth of his service, particularly during his years on the University Council. As Pro Chancellor and later Chancellor, he guided the institution through significant developments including major capital projects, governance reforms, and the early period of the Covid-19 response. He also oversaw the appointment of the current Vice- Chancellor and contributed to the creation of the University’s strategic plan, Taumata Teitei.
Scott’s philanthropic support was also noted. He and his wife have contributed close to $125,000 to student well-being initiatives, scholarships and cultural additions to campus, including the carved Kauri pou, He Taumata Tau. His involvement in the University’s major fundraising campaigns helped deliver record-setting philanthropic outcomes that continue to support staff and students.
Scott St John received his honorary doctorate from the University of Auckland on 19 March in a ceremony at the Fale Pasifika.
