Soundtrack to Your Studies - 1963
Campus sounds from the sixties.

Two of the most important events on the student calendar were the Freshers Ball and the Graduation Ball, which both took place at the Peter Pan cabaret at the top of Queen Street with the Arthur Skelton orchestra providing music for dancing and a floorshow featuring vocalists from other notable venues around the city.

However, the organisers made it clear in Craccum that Freshers were not allowed to imbibe alcohol (!)

However, less successful was the Capping Ball, which failed to cover its costs. Fortunately, in contrast, the Capping Revue held at His Majesty’s Theatre was deemed to be one of the best in many years. Six original compositions were written for the show by Patrick Flynn for the 13-piece band, there were over a dozen backdrops, and multiple dance routines. Craccum gave it a glowing review and it also toured to Hamilton.

In the wider Auckland scene, the instrumental music of The Shadows was having a big influence on local musicians. One of the most successful local adopters of this style was Peter Posa. Here he is at Customs Street coffee lounge, The Shiralee.

And here’s his smash hit ‘White Rabbit’ which was written by two local amateur musicians.
The biggest international act that year was undoubtedly The Beatles and their popularity would increase even further when they visited New Zealand the following year. Here is some footage of them performing live in 1963.
