How to apply for a scholarship
Scholarship application checklist
1. Check the rules
- Read the scholarship regulations carefully
- Make sure you are eligible before you start
- If you are applying for a school leaver/first year scholarship, check out the guidebook for additional information
2. Find the application form
- Go to the official University of Auckland Scholarships website, don't use links from other websites
- The Applications open now webpage lists everything that you can apply for right now
- Find a scholarship has all the scholarships, prizes and awards offered by the University
3. Deadlines matter
- Take a note of the date and time the application form closes
- Submit early - late applications are not accepted
4. Write your statement
- Read the questions first
- Write your answers in a separate document, then copy them in to the form
- Include study/career goals, work experience, achievments, financial need, and how the scholarship will help you
- Make sure what you write directly relates to the question
5. Academic record
- Already studied at the University of Auckland? No transcript needed
- Studied elsewhere (New Zealand or overseas)? Upload your transcripts (don't forget to include the grade scale)
- Coming from secondary school or kura? We will request your NCEA/CIE/IB results
- Some scholarships require a minimum GPA or rank score, check the regulations for each scholarship
6. References, Verifications and Endorsements
If your application needs a reference, verification or endorsement:
- Ask a teacher, dean, careers adviser, or community leader (not family) depending on what is required
- Check they are happy to help and have time
- Some application forms will lock parts of your form once you request an endorsement - check carefully before you submit your request
7. How Scholarships are awarded
- Applications are reviewed by a selection committee
- Committee recommdations are approved by the University of Auckland Council
- You'll be notified of the result and successful applicants will be given details on what they have been awarded
- Notifications are usually sent about 8 weeks after the application closing date
Final tip
- Start your application early and give yourself time to get everything right
- Apply for anything and everything you think you might be eligible for
- Keep applying, there are scholarships at all levels of study
