English language requirements


The University of Auckland sets standards for English language proficiency for admission to the University for international applicants.

All applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English. As an undergraduate or postgraduate student, you can satisfy the English language requirements in a number of ways depending on your circumstances. In order to meet the requirements you must fulfil one of the options below.

English language tests


You can use the English language tests in the table below to meet the University’s English language requirements. You must satisfy the requirements in one sitting and results are valid for two years from the date on the test certificate. Please note that the requirements below are for 2016. If applying for entry in 2015, please refer to University of Auckland English language requirements 2015.

English Language Academy pathway programmes


Applicants who have a conditional offer from the University of Auckland may be considered for entry to pathway English language courses at the University of Auckland English Language Academy (ELA). Applicants who successfully complete a pathway course with the required grade are deemed to have fulfilled English language entry requirements to the University of Auckland.

  • Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP)
  • 10-week fast track English Pathway for Undergraduate Studies (EPUS)**
  • 10-week fast track English Pathway for Postgraduate Studies (EPPS)**

Approved alternatives to IELTS requirements and English language waivers


Applicants who have successfully completed University study in the English medium may not be required to undertake a language test. This is valid for study in the following countries and territories: Australia, Botswana, Canada (excluding Quebec), Cyprus, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Nigeria, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, The Netherlands, Uganda, UK, USA, Zambia, Zimbabwe. It is also valid for study in the following regions: the Caribbean and the South Pacific.
