Evacuation chair training

Evacuation chairs are designed to transport a person downstairs during an evacuation or when lifts cannot be used. There should be enough individuals trained to cover shift patterns and absence from work. Staff members selected for this training should be willing to undertake the role, physically able to operate the chair and should work on the same floor that the chair is located.

Aim

Participants will gain hands-on experience, in the safe use and operation of evacuation chairs to safely transport a person downstairs and out of a building.Once an individual has successfully completed training they can operate that model of chair.

Key content

By the end of this session participants will be able to:
  • Include chair operation techniques
  • Safety considerations
  • Transferring people with varying disabilities into and out of the chair

Suitability

Frontline and public facing staff and anyone who may deal with abusive members of the public.

Cancellation and enrolment information

Send an email to UoA HSW team at hsw@auckland.ac.nz with some date and time options to get a session organised. 4 weeks’ notice is required for a session to be organised.

The relevent team will need to book a venue by a stairwell that provides sufficient space to practice the correct techniques.

Cancelling training sessions within five working days of the scheduled date will incur full payment.

Note that this training is only available for employees of the University of Auckland.
