Student mobility
The International Office supports the movement of students between countries or institutions to study, learn, or gain experience as part of their education.
On this page:
Overview
The International Office supports the University's global engagement by enabling high-quality international learning experiences for students.
We facilitate a range of inbound and outbound mobility programmes that strengthen academic partnerships, enhance student outcomes and contribute to the University’s internationalisation strategy.
The team also manages international travel registration for University-supported student activities (excluding PhD travel) for UoA enrolled students.
Student exchange
Exchange is a reciprocal, two-way mobility programme that enables students to study at partner universities while maintaining enrolment at their home institution.
- Inbound exchange refers to international students from overseas institutions temporarily studying at UoA.
- Outbound exchange refers to UoA students travelling to study temporarily at an institution overseas.
The International Office manages the exchange programme under Ministry of Education approval and ensures sustainable reciprocity across partnerships.
- Students pay tuition to their home university, with fees waived at the host institution.
- Exchanges are typically one semester of full-time study with a maximum of the two semesters.
- Academic credit is pre-approved by faculties to support timely progression.
For a full list of our exchange partners, refer to Exchange partners.
Study abroad
The Study Abroad programme enables international students to study at the University for one or two semesters, including students from institutions without formal exchange agreements.
Unlike exchange, Study Abroad is a fee-paying, one-way mobility pathway, supporting both international student recruitment and global classroom diversity.
Students typically enrol in standard semester coursework, with options for customised academic experiences, such as:
- Field trips and experiential learning
- Co-curricular activities
The International Office works closely with overseas partners to deliver meaningful academic and cultural experiences aligned with UoA’s teaching excellence.
Short-term opportunities
Outbound
The International Office also supports short-term global learning experiences expanding our students' intercultural competence, employability and global outlook.
Short-term outbound opportunities for UoA enrolled students include:
- Summer school
- Global internships
- Study tours
- Leadership and innovation programmes
- Other short international experiences
Some programmes offer partial funding for eligible students.
Inbound
The International Office partners with overseas universities and UoA faculties to deliver customised short courses and group programmes that advance internationalisation, academic collaboration and student recruitment.
Inbound short course and group programmes typically run 2-4 weeks (or longer as required) and may include:
- Faculty led academic content
- Guest lectures
- Field trips and industry school visits
- Cultural and experiential learning
These initiatives support undergraduate. postgraduate and transnational education (TNE) recruitment, while offering international students an immersive introduction to academic life and student experience at the University.
