Community living
Halls of Residence provide residential community living options for Māori and Pacific students. These communities are intended to provide a greater sense of belonging and support to residents while still fostering diversity across each hall holistically.
Living in these communities is optional. Interested prospective residents can notify their interest during the application process. Placement in the communities is subject to availability.
Kaupapa Māori community - Grafton Hall
Our Kaupapa Māori community provides a space for academic, social and cultural growth by providing a space that centres Te Ao and Te Reo Māori. This community is available for tauira, students who hold Māori whakapapa and are of Māori descent. Tauira must wish to live in an environment underpinned by tikanga Māori and shared cultural values.
The Kaupapa Māori focuses on providing a sense of belonging, fostering wellbeing and ensuring engagement by being led with manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and kotahitanga.
This community is designed for tauira Māori at all stages of their cultural journey, from those with little experience in Māori spaces to those who are culturally entrenched. We welcome all tauira Māori.
Moana Pasifika community - O'Rorke Hall
Our Moana Pasifika floor is for students wishing to live in a supportive academic environment grounded in Pacific cultural values and identities. Through this initiative, we aim to create a space that fosters a sense of community, belonging and recognition of residents' varied languages and identities. There is active collaboration and engagement with our wider University of Auckland communities and support services, cultural mentorship, academic pathways support and leadership opportunities.

Ako - All halls
Ako, meaning ‘to learn’ in both te reo Māori and lea faka-Tonga, reflects the reciprocal nature of teaching and learning. This programme aims to provide structured academic support to Pacific students living in our halls through weekly mentor-led study sessions, offering students the opportunity to engage with dedicated mentors from various faculties in a collaborative and enriching environment, while strengthening pathways to academic achievement and cultivating leadership and excellence among Pacific students.
