Privacy Notice

The University of Auckland Recreation and Wellness Centre (the Centre) comprises the Recreation Centre and Sports Centre. This privacy notice explains how the Centre collects, stores, uses and shares personal information about our members (who could be University of Auckland students, non-University students, alumni, or other members of the University community, including staff). This notice should be read together with the Membership Agreement and Conditions of Entry.

How we collect personal information

The Centre collects personal information about our members in order to deliver recreation and sports services. We collect most of this information from members directly, and some information will be generated as members use the services we provide.


The information we collect includes: 

  • name and contact details (including email address and phone number)
  • demographic information (including age, gender and ethnicity)
  • health information (including blood pressure and, where relevant, medical history)
  • exercise plans or other information generated as members use the services we provide (including information about member interactions with us)
  • study programme information (where a member is also a student)
  • evidence that a member meets the conditions of their membership affiliation (such as proof  of enrollment or employment)
  • financial information relating to payment for services (including credit card or direct debit details), and
  • audio and video footage where CCTV systems are used at Centre facilities

How we use personal information

The Centre will use personal information about our members only in ways that support the delivery of recreation and sports services. The ways we use personal information include to: 

  • create and maintain member profiles 
  • correspond with members about their use of recreation and sports services
  • deliver the recreation and sports services members request from us 
  • manage entry to our facilities
  • tailor marketing and other campaigns, including corresponding with members about recreation and sports services, or other offerings, that we believe they might be interested in  
  • ensure safe and accurate advice is provided to members
  • meet our health and safety obligations
  • benchmark member health information and track progress alongside fitness programming provided
  • analyse aggregated (not individual) membership trends for internal reporting purposes, and
  • understand and improve the recreation and sports services we provide.

When we share personal information

Only Centre staff with a legitimate need to access member personal information can do so. However, the Centre may need to share member personal information in some circumstances in order to deliver recreation and sports services. We may share personal information with: 

  • contracted service providers which the University uses to perform services on its behalf (such as IT service providers), within and outside New Zealand
  • the University's legal advisers, other professional advisers, or insurers, and
  • in the event of an emergency, police, medical or hospital personnel, civil emergency services, a member’s legal representative or nominated emergency contact person, or any other person assessed as necessary to respond to the emergency.

How to access or correct personal information

All members have the right to request a copy of the personal information the Centre holds about them, or to correct thei information if they believe it is wrong.

Members can access and correct most of their personal information directly via the Fusion Member Portal. However, members may also make a request to access or correct their personal information by following the steps set out in the ‘Accessing and controlling your personal information’ section of the University’s Privacy Statement.
