Candidate: Harim Kim

Read why Harim Kim would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.

We are all united by a common purpose: the pursuit of knowledge, growth, and excellence. However, there’s much more to change to achieve this, and the untapped potential waiting to be unlocked drives me to apply for the University Council Student Representative position.

Student-centred learning must thrive at the heart of our university’s ethos. To achieve this, we must ensure that all students’ voices and perspectives shape institutional policies. My experience as a former Justice Policy Committee member at the New Zealand Labour Party equips me with the skills for policy analysis and development, addressing the alarming issues we face, such as the critical role of financial support for academic success. Excellence in our studies demands not only academic dedication but also the financial freedom to fully engage in education. I aim to create an inclusive academic environment where every student, regardless of their background or economic circumstances, can excel. Furthermore, I aspire to create dynamic and engaging learning environments by implementing modern pedagogical techniques and leveraging technology to meet the unique needs of students, making education more interactive, innovative, and effective. In research, I seek active collaboration on interdisciplinary projects to bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and solutions to the institution and the student body while upholding rigorous research methodologies and ethical standards.

Community understanding lies at the heart of a harmonious academic environment. Drawing from my current experience as an interviewer at the Citizens Advice Bureau and a youth advocate at Amnesty International Aotearoa NZ, I understand the importance of fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse groups. As a Student Representative, I will serve as a bridge between students, faculty, administration, and the wider community, utilising my background to celebrate our differences while embracing our shared values. I am committed to cultivating an inclusive culture that promotes respect, empathy, and active listening, thereby nurturing an atmosphere where every individual feels a sense of belonging and appreciation.

Effective management skills are pivotal to realising any vision. Serving as the Co-President of Amnesty on Campus and having previously held the position of International Secretary at NZ Young Labour, along with my current active participation in various committees at our university, including my role as Deputy Editor for the Nomad Journal and committee membership with MADE (Make a Difference with Economics), I will leverage my extensive organisational leadership experience to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the Council’s proceedings. I aim to streamline decision-making processes, foster constructive communication channels, and ensure that all perspectives are thoughtfully considered. With a track record of promoting collaboration and synergy, I envision a cohesive council environment that embraces diversity and encourages fresh and effective solutions for our university community’s challenges.

Reflecting and embracing diversity isn’t merely a goal; it’s a fundamental guiding principle. As your Student Representative, I pledge to uphold and amplify all students’ voices, ensuring that every background and identity is not just heard but truly valued. Building on my experience as the Multicultural Representative at NZ Young Labour, I understand the significance of inclusivity andequity. I have advocated for underrepresented groups, which has equipped me with the tools to actively seek input from marginalised communities and advocate for inclusive policies. And I will do this for us, for our university! My mission is to help shape our university into a place where diversity is not only acknowledged but celebrated and where equity becomes the norm in all our policies and practices.

The role of Student Representative is not just a position but an opportunity to shape our academic journey for both the present and future generations. I humbly seek your support and vote as we work together to create a university that offers the future you want.
