Candidate: Gevargis Thomas

Read why Gevargis Thomas would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.

As an international PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering and the current PhD representative for my department, I have experienced firsthand the diverse challenges and opportunities faced by students at the University of Auckland. My journey, from India to the US, and now to New Zealand, has given me a unique perspective on higher education systems, student wellbeing, and the importance of inclusive, student-centred governance.

My academic and professional background spans teaching, research, and community engagement. I have served as a lecturer in India, mentored students to publish research, and led sustainability initiatives that empowered underrepresented voices. At the University of Auckland, I have managed cross-disciplinary research projects, collaborated with local communities, and worked as a Research Integrity Adviser, ensuring ethical and responsible research practices. These experiences have deepened my understanding of academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and the pursuit of excellence in education and research.

As a student representative, I am committed to advocating for all students, domestic and international, undergraduate and postgraduate, from every background. I understand the importance of equity, diversity, and the principles of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and I am dedicated to ensuring that Council decisions reflect the needs and aspirations of our entire student community. My own experiences navigating new cultures and systems have made me especially sensitive to the challenges faced by international students and those from underrepresented groups.

I bring strong management, communication, and organisational skills, honed through leading research projects, serving on committees, and working in both academic and administrative roles. I am comfortable engaging with complex policy, finance, and governance issues, and I am eager to contribute to the Finance, Honours, and Student Appeals Committees.

Above all, I believe in the power of student voices to shape the future of our university. If elected, I will work tirelessly to ensure that every student’s perspective is heard and valued at the highest level of governance. I am passionate about building bridges between students, staff, and the wider community, and I am ready to represent you with integrity, empathy, and a commitment to positive change.

Thank you for considering my candidacy.
