Candidate: Matthew Prance
Read why Matthew Prance would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.
University life is more than just lectures and assignments; it’s about building a vibrant, inclusive community where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. To make this vision a reality, students must have a strong and authentic voice in the decision-making. Over the years, I have proudly served and advocated to improve student life, and I am ready to bring these experiences to the University Council as your Student Representative.
I believe that excellent teaching starts by listening closely to students. Having served for two years on the Teaching & Learning Quality Committee as a Student Representative, I have worked closely with the Faculty of Engineering & Design’s staff to elevate student concerns and drive improvements to the quality of teaching across all departments. Additionally, serving as Class Representative for my Part I cohort, I ensured that every voice was heard – from managing workloads and assessment concerns to launching initiatives that promote well-being and community engagement. These roles first-hand showed me the power Rangatahi perspective has in shaping all aspects of university life, whilst teaching me how to listen with empathy, negotiate constructively, and ensure that diverse voices are heard and respected.
I have also helped students feel included and confident as they begin their academic journey – Leading tours for my Faculty, I offer prospective students a genuine glimpse into campus life, addressing their questions and sharing advice, ensuring everyone (regardless of background) feels welcome and inspired to study at Waipapa Taumata Rau. Through these interactions, I have honed my approachability, active listening and understanding of student concerns; skills I will carry into council to advocate effectively on behalf of the student body.
Beyond campus, I serve on the board of Aerospace Auckland, an organisation that supports and facilitates the growth of Tāmaki Makaurau’s aerospace sector through innovation, education, and networking. In this role, I actively engage with students to introduce them to the industry by providing resources and mentorship pathways and encouraging participation in events that help students develop professional networks. Through this work, I have strengthened my advocacy, outreach, and stakeholder engagement skills and learned how to connect student perspectives with broader industry and governance initiatives. This experience reinforces my ability to represent students at high levels, balancing diverse needs and ensuring opportunities are accessible to all.
Through all these roles, I have developed a strong commitment to ensuring that every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. By voting for me, you can be confident that issues such as student well-being, affordability, accessibility, and equity remain central to council decisions. I will be transparent, approachable, and proactive in engaging with students across all faculties, working hard to ensure every single student’s voice is heard at the highest level of decision-making.
With your support, I will continue to champion initiatives that enhance student life, advocate for opportunities for all students, and ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and uplifted.
Let’s all build a better University of Auckland – Together.
