Candidate: Samar Singh

Read why Samar Singh would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.

Kia ora, my name is Samar Singh,

I wish to contest for the council election because I believe in one powerful idea: a university where every student feels seen, supported, and able to thrive, not just academically, but as a whole person.

Behind every lecture, assignment, and late-night study session is a student carrying far more than just a backpack. Many of us juggle work, cultural obligations, family, and the silent weight of stress and anxiety. Some of us are navigating these pressures in a second language or far from home. I’ve felt that pressure myself and I’ve seen too many of my peers suffer in silence, unsure where to turn for help.

That’s why mental health and wellbeing will be my top priority if I am elected on the Council. This is a core part of the University’s vision and strategy.
Right now, Student Support Services exist but they’re often invisible. I will advocate for:

  • Greater visibility and accessibility of mental health services
  • Proactive awareness campaigns that normalise seeking help
  • Wellbeing embedded in academic life, not separate from it
  • Culturally responsive and inclusive support, especially for Māori, Pacific, international, and minority students

University should be a place where we can succeed without burning out. Where getting help is easy. Where no student is left feeling alone.

Leadership with Purpose

I was honoured to serve as the first Indian Head Boy at King’s College in 2024, where I led diverse student councils and initiatives with compassion and vision. Today, as President of Rotaract Papatoetoe Central, I lead community projects that empower young people, uplift mental health awareness, and make service a way of life. With over 780 hours of volunteering for the community, I’ve learned that real leadership means showing up especially when it’s hard.

A Voice for Every Student

I grew up in South Auckland, and I’m proud of my Indian heritage. I speak English and Hindi, and I know what it’s like to walk between cultures, expectations, and environments. Through work with the Sanskar Charitable Trust, the NZ Secondary Students’ Choir, and the Auckland U17 Cricket Academy, I’ve learned how to build bridges between faculties, communities, and voices.

Beyond the Books

Balance is required. I love indulging in good music, cricket with mates, and the occasional Netflix binge. I believe balance isn’t just important but it’s essential as it keeps us grounded and gives us the energy to succeed in all aspects of life.

I’m not just here to represent, I’m here to be a bridge between students and University leadership. I understand that policies and decisions made at Council level have a real impact on our lives. I’ll work to balance both perspectives, ensuring student voices shape decisions especially around wellbeing, learning, and support. I’m ready to listen, act, and lead with purpose.

Let’s shape a future where student success means not only academic achievement, but also health, balance, and a true sense of belonging.

Ngā mihi nui,
Samar Singh
