Candidate: Shae Hardy

Read why Shae Hardy would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.

Kia Ora koutou, my name is Shae Hardy, and I am running for student representative of the University of Auckland.

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Laws alongside a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Marine Science. Through these studies I have developed strong analytical skills, the ability to consider issues from multiple perspectives, and a deep interest in how law, policy, and science intersect to serve the public good.

Beyond my studies, I am a Resident Advisor at 55 Symonds. In this role I have supported students through both personal and academic challenges, organised community-building events, and acted as a bridge between students and the University. This experience has given me practical skills in listening, mediation, and leadership; all of which I believe are essential for effective Council representation.

I have also been involved with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative under Student Disability Services as a volunteer presenter and trainer. I know firsthand the importance of ensuring that all students, particularly those from under-represented communities, are heard and supported within the University.

The Council is tasked with providing governance and oversight that balances the universities autonomy with accountability and support to students, staff, and the wider public. If elected, I would bring my own experience as a student, but also the voices of those I represent and the experiences of being a student and a staff member. I would work to ensure that decisions reflect student needs and priorities, while respecting the Council’s responsibility for the long-term sustainability and strategic direction of the University.

At the heart of it, I care about people. I care about ensuring students feel like they belong here, that their voices matter, they are heard, and their experience is about more than just passing papers. If elected, I’ll bring that same energy and commitment to representing students; listening first, speaking up when needed, and always keeping inclusivity and community at the centre of what I do.

I am committed to the principles of academic freedom, excellence in teaching and research, and the responsibilities we share under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. My academic and personal background has also given me strong awareness of environmental issues, community engagement, and the importance of diverse perspectives in decision-making processes.

Thank you for taking the time to read a little about me. I would be truly honoured to represent you and to continue building a university environment where every student can feel supported, valued, and able to thrive.

Ngā mihi nui,
Shae Hardy
