Candidate: Shakeel Shamaail
Read why Shakeel Shamaail would like to represent students on the University of Auckland Council.
My name is Shakeel Shamaail, and I am putting my hand up to be YOUR Student Representative on the University of Auckland Council.
I am currently studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting/Management) and a Bachelor of Laws. My studies have enabled me to have a strong sense of governance, accountability, and financial acumen, skills which are essential for representing students in decision-making spaces. I have also had first-hand experience with serving on boards and have a strong interest in governance. But beyond that, I am someone who deeply values people, relationships, and fairness. I believe the voices of students must not only be present but truly heard and respected at the highest level of governance that our university has to offer.
One of the core principles I will take with me to Council is the importance of
protecting academic freedom and student voice. Universities exist as places of
learning, questioning, and challenging ideas, this must never be undermined. At a time when courses are being reviewed, costs are rising, and students are under greater pressure than ever, it is vital that the interests of students remain front and centre in every major decision.
The year ahead will be especially significant for our university. With the departure of incumbent Vice-Chancellor Dawn Freshwater, the Council will be
determining not only the leadership of the University but also the direction
and priorities that will shape our future. This is a turning point, and it is crucial that students are not left out of these conversations. If elected, I will ensure that our voices as students are not just heard but acted on in the decisions that shape our university.
Student wellbeing must be at the heart of our university. If elected, I will push for stronger support for mental health and wellbeing, ensuring services are accessible, timely, and responsive to student needs. At the same time, I will advocate for improved safety and security measures across campus, protecting students from day to night. This means working closely with Campus Care, Campus Life, and Security teams to ensure concerns are not only heard but acted upon. Every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued throughout their journey at Waipapa Taumata Rau, The University of Auckland.
As a result of the cost-of-living crisis and other economic pressures, if elected to council I will advocate for greater financial support measures, ensure transparency around student fees, and push for policies that ease the burden on students.
Change doesn’t just happen - we make it happen. Vote Shakeel for Student Rep!
