Ngā Marae o Waipapa Taumata Rau
On this page:
Waipapa Marae and Ngā Tauira Marae stand as two central pillars of Māori cultural life and the inclusion of the diverse cultures that are at Waipapa Taumata Rau, the University of Auckland.
These marae not only provide spaces for ceremonial gatherings and educational activities but also embody the university's commitment to honouring and integrating Māori heritage and world view within its academic environment.
Waipapa Marae
Ko Tāne-nui-a-rangi te wharenui
Ko Reipae te wharekai
Ko Waipapa te marae
Waipapa Marae, established in 1988, is the cultural heart of Māori life on the university’s city campus. Its’ centrepiece is Tāne-nui-a-rangi, a carved meeting house honouring Tāne, the deity who brought the three baskets of knowledge to humanity.
Ngā Tauira Marae
Ko Tūtahi Tonu te wharenui
Ko Ngā Piringa te wharekai
Ko Ngā Tauira te marae
Ngā Tauira Marae, established in 1983 on the Epsom Campus, was the second marae built on a tertiary institution’s grounds in Aotearoa New Zealand. It became a vibrant hub for Māori and Pacific education, fostering cultural identity and community among students and staff. After the Epsom Campus closure in 2023, the university chose to safeguard Tūtahi Tonu by preserving and refurbishing its taonga for relocation to the City Campus in August 2024.
