Transdisciplinary research

Find out what transdisciplinary research is, how it is practised at the University, and access practical advice, support and development opportunities.

What is transdisciplinary research?

Transdisciplinary research describes research that transcends disciplinary-specific ways of working, integrating academic research from unrelated disciplines and non-academic participants, leading to the creation of new knowledge to achieve a common goal relevant for our communities. The OECD describes six defining characteristics of transdisciplinary research:

  • A wide breadth/diversity of interdisciplinarity
  • Deep disciplinary integration
  • A high degree and quality of interaction with non-academic participants
  • A diverse composition of non-academic partnerships
  • Early participatory engagement
  • Diverse types of knowledge

Jo Bailey, a designer and design researcher based at Massey University in Wellington, has created a way of understanding transdisciplinarity using food.

I - Intradisciplinary: Intradisciplinary working is within one discipline. Like a single ingredient, clearly distinguishable. Can - Crossdisciplinary: Crossdisciplinary working views one discipline from the frame of reference of another. It’s like lots of different ingredients on a plate, but without chopping them up and mixing them. Make - Multidisciplinary: Multidisciplinary working brings disciplines together so they can learn from each other, drawing on the mix of disciplinary knowledge. It’s like a salad: the original ingredients are intact, but the flavours begin to blend. It - Interdisciplinary: Interdisciplinary working starts to take a new form, integrating knowledge and methods from different disciplines and synthesising into a new whole. It’s like a stew: the original ingredients are still partly distinguishable, but the overall is a blended pot of mixed flavours. Tasty - Transdisciplinary: Transdisiplinary working produces a new, novel form or way of working beyond the original disciplinary boundaries. It’s like a cake: you can no longer see the form of the ingredients as they have taken on a different shape and flavour.

Current Waipapa Taumata Rau funding initiatives

Reflecting the commitment to transdisciplinary research in Taumata Teitei, new funding opportunities are available for encouraging and enabling transdisciplinary research:

In addition to these funds, the University brings together researchers from all disciplines in Transdisciplinary Ideation Workshops and networking opportunities.

Start your transdisciplinary research journey

Building intra-, cross-, multi- and interdisciplinary foundational collaborations start at the University. We encourage researchers to explore potential collaborators, experts, faculties and University Research Centres (URCs) at Waipapa Taumata Rau by doing the following:

Engaging with New Zealand universities and Public Research Organisations

Building institutional collaborations enhances the diversity of perspectives, resources and methodologies in transdisciplinary research enabling the pursuit of complex challenges.
