Domestic

You will be a domestic student if you are:

  • A New Zealand citizen
  • A New Zealand permanent resident
  • A New Zealand resident visa holder
  • An Australian citizen living in New Zealand
  • An Australian permanent resident living in New Zealand

International

You will be an international student if you are not:

  • A New Zealand citizen
  • A New Zealand permanent resident
  • A New Zealand resident visa holder
  • An Australian citizen living in New Zealand
  • An Australian permanent resident living in New Zealand

Please note, if you’re an international student completing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and are currently in New Zealand:

  • You can receive domestic fees. For more information, please visit Doctoral fees
  • But, you do need a student visa to be able study. For more information, please see Visa information

Changing from international to domestic status

You may change your residency or citizenship status during your studies. If this is the case, you can ask for your residency or citizenship status to be updated on your university record.

After you change your residency status, you will be able to receive domestic fees. Please note, there are deadlines to change your residency status by to get domestic fees in the next available semester.

Please note, for courses that continue across multiple semesters/quarters (e.g., courses with A and B components), the fee amount due for the full length of the course is determined by the fee status you had when you first began the course.
